Celebrity

The study of celebrity culture is still limited. Celebrities are people who are in the media therefore known by the public. It can seem not interesting studying celebrity, but celebrity is not only about gossip, talent or who is the sexiest man or woman of the year. We underestimate too much the power of celebrity because it reflects the society where they live. Therefore, they can tell us a lot about our culture and our values. Some celebrities can be a model for people at home and can inspire people in a good way. Celebrities are all around us if people at home decide to turn on the television or the radio or if they decide to read the newspapers, they will see them. They are everywhere. Celebrities can show what we are concerned about. They can shape our society only by their behavior, because an image of one’s person can be very powerful. Sometimes they can reflect a good image by donating their money, which is sometime easy money, to good causes or simply by doing something good. However, they can also do the opposite by drinking too much or simply by behaving very badly. Sometime, some fans will take example of their favorite actor or singer, because fans will think is a “cool” thing to do and they might do the same and so on. Therefore, some celebrity can create a new tendency in fashion or in any other sphere, which can be good or wrong.

Celebrity has changed a lot through years. Today celebrities occupy a bigger place in our television and magazines. People of today allow more importance to them than before. With all the new technologies, having access to all those celebrities is much easier. “The technological and media changes that have occurred so quickly with such force, that have given birth to our celebrity culture in a relatively short period of time, are for many disheartening.” (Harmon) And media realised they can make money using them. However, celebrities can also take advantage of their own body to make more money, but celebrities can destroy themselves through media as well. In fact, it can be the other way around as well; media have too much power these days. The power and influence of the media can change people’s ideas or opinions but media can also destroy people. Actually, some of the journalists in the media have this bad habit to enjoy destroying every celebrity’s image as they can.

Being famous has a lot of advantages, but it also comes with a price. The media know that people at home are curious to know what their beloved celebrities are doing, so paparazzi are there to keep the people at home happy. At what cost? Paparazzi take pictures and sells them at the magazine that is ready to pay the most for those pictures. They pick into their privacy with no shame. Privacy is the price to pay, except if you can pay a lot of money to have a little of privacy. All human beings have curiosity inside them and that is why reality TV shows exist. Reality shows are there to entertain people at home and to make new people famous even if they have no talent what so ever. “ “Better to be king for a night, than schmuck for a lifetime!”—these celebrities and their works speak to us, even give voice to our own desires, as they reflect back to us the realities and illusions of today’s fame.” (Harmon) People can think that celebrities have the perfect life and live in a perfect world, but in their industry they still struggle with the same issue as everyone else such as sexism and racism.
