What is gender? According to Judith Butler, gender is not something that we are born with but a result of the repetition of certain cultural performances. In popular culture, we find numerous ways in which gender is performed, celebrated and idolized. For this section, we examined several performances of gender with regard to essays by Butler and other theorists in order to create a better understanding of how bodies and sex are linked to gender performances and sexual desire.
