To which extend does culture influence our lives? Are we free to act according to our own willing?  In this section you will learn more about the way culture -- as a web of meanings, norms and values -- is internaliized. Hegemonic values which are at the base of Western society (think of the capitalist economic pattern) are mediated through social institutions such as family, school, the media and the state. Many people underestimate the power of these institutions.
